History: The NOLA Hurricane Fund (NHF) was founded by four Tulane University
students in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Seeking to address both short and long term problems that faced the
city of New Orleans, the organization created a three pronged
mission: Rescue, Relief and Rebuild.
To facilitate rescue efforts,
NHF funded the purchase of necessary supplies for student Emergency
Medical Technicians serving immediately after the storm. Next, the
organization financially sponsored five families whose homes were
destroyed and whose children attended the New Orleans public
schools. Finally, NHF helped to remodel two schools that were
re-opening, utilizing over 400 volunteers during a 5 month period.
Having observed the lack of technology access in New Orleans
through their work with the sponsored families and schools, NHF
began its long term rebuilding efforts in the Spring of 2006.
Changing its name to the NOLA Fund to represent a new, forward
looking outlook, the organization seeks to increase the
opportunities afforded to returning New Orleans students by
providing free, after school technology classes. To create a comprehensive program that ensures the continued success of
its students, the NOLA Fund actually gives every graduate of its
class a computer to take home and keep. |
